axial3D and Dr. Tim Brown will share the stage at next week’s Digital DNA Conference, to present ‘Tumours, Transplants and Technology: AI for Life‘. The story of a world-first, life-saving operation that took place here in Belfast. A unique operation, aided by a 3D printed anatomical model of the patient’s kidney.
Delegates will hear the story of a patient, who urgently required a life-saving kidney donation; Her father, who was willing to donate but had a tumor on his kidney; and the technology that made it possible to conduct the transplant safely.

The team will share their experience and the journey of how the operation was made possible.
Speaking on how the 3D printed kidney model aided the surgery, Dr. Brown said “The cyst was buried deep within the renal cortex and therefore invisible on the back bench. A replica 3D model was used for preoperative planning and intra-operative localization of the lesion. It’s difficult to underestimate how valuable this strategy was in terms of preoperative planning and achieving successful clearance of the lesion.”
The panel discussion is also set to explore the future of 3D printing, automation and machine learning in medicine. axial3D is investing heavily to include Artificial Intelligence within modules in the firm’s latest solution, axial3D assure. axial3D now aims to eliminate labor intensive and complex tasks involved in creating 3D printed models from 2D scans.

Artificial Intelligence & 3D Printing: The Future of Surgery will be an immersive dive into how axial3D is utilizing AI algorithms in workflows to speed up the process of creating a 3D printed model from 2D patient scans. By investing in these algorithms, axial3D has been able to minimize the time spent at production stage. This means that 3D printed models are produced faster and makes patient care a priority.
